How did this happen

I grew up watching my grandma sew, and I remember my mom making our figure skating costumes (likely more than that, but that’s what I remember!). My grandma is amazing… she’s always kept up on the latest gear and does amazing work. Her quilts are pieces of art that will be cherished for years. The extent of my own sewing experience as a child was making Barbie clothes… looking back, that was pretty great practice! If you can sew leggings out of spandex for a Barbie… you can make them for anyone.

So… how did I get back to sewing again (other than making some cloth diapers 7 years ago)! It actually started with babywearing! There are these amazing handwoven wraps out there. These woven wraps are incredible are beautiful and the colours are incredible. I even bought myself a loom, thinking that I would make these wraps and be able to wear my babies in them. I still haven’t made anything, but perhaps you’ll see a blog post about one day. “The Loom” is a running joke for my husband, but for me it’s just part of my creative journey.

After buying three different wraps, I came to the conclusion that I actually prefer soft structured carriers, like Lillebaby and Ergo. Somehow I found Sew Toot patterns and made myself a Cozy Cover. I LOVED the instructions and found it so rewarding to Finish a project. With the clear instructions I felt that I could tackle something bigger. I made the Sewtoot little pick me up out of one of the woven wraps I had. I am still so incredibly proud of this baby carrier!

When we found out we were expecting another baby, I went back to work.  Much of my workload was reviewing reports, which at times, allowed me to listen to podcasts. The sewing podcasts I found were “Makerstyle” and “Sewing out Loud”. From there I just fell into a huge rabbit hole of PDF patterns.

So why do I want to blog? I think that making your own clothing is going explode in popularity… we are tired of clothes fitting poorly, shrinking or falling apart. I want to be part of this explosion… showing new sewists that it’s not scary, and providing tutorials that will allow them to succeed.

I look forward to getting to know you! I will be aiming to post weekly, I try to post daily on Instagram so follow me there to see what I’m up to.

  1. I look forward to reading your posts, I love sewing (even though I am definitely a beginner) but don’t have a lot of time to do it – kids, job, writing a book – the usual stuff 😂
